South of Okeechobee A Short Story eBook Daniel Powell
This story will take you back to a little south Florida Everglades town called Blackfish (population 400). It is written in first person and reads as if it is being recalled by an old Florida Cracker. Most charming and brilliantly written.Checking out the bio of Daniel Powell, I am not surprised to find him a winner of short story competition, as he puts together a cleverly crafted tale; humorously reminiscent of tales written by Carl Hiaasen.
As the story goes, whispers of the 'Skunk Ape' who haunts the swamp and is seen on rare occasions is not just the main topic of this story. It is richly enhanced by every day life as it was back in the mid and late 1920's. Prohibition and ambition by rum runners and who made the best rum comes to a page-turning zenith that made this book a very memorable and enjoyable read.

South of Okeechobee A Short Story eBook Daniel Powell Reviews
Very interesting, keeps you reading even after you are too tired to read on. I will recommend it to any one interested in reading.
This was a fun little read. It made me want to go visit that part of Florida. Is this fact or is the author great with a tall tale?
Great story! I found myself fully immersed in it and wasn't ready for it to end. A Skunk Ape? Whodda thunk it! Yep, I'd recommend this story and author.
Whether it is myth, legend or a speck of truth this was a fun read. I usually just read, but this one begs to have something said. Glad I was told it would be short. Thought that the characters were well described, even the lack of description in some cases was better cause it lets you picture them as you want. Only wish he had gotten the chance to confirm his suspicion. Could say more, but then you wouldn't have to read and Mr. Powell did a good job.
This is a good little short story that is perfect for your lunch break at work – it takes about ten minutes to read. The author quickly gets you up to speed with the characters and situations, and the story provides a nice break from sitting down and reading through a full-length novel.
I'm not a Florida cracker, but I've lived in Florida long enough to have met quite a few. So I really was eager to read this short story of the Prohibition-era origin of the Florida Skunk Ape, a mythological creature of the great Florida swamplands. It's the tale of two brothers, moonshine, swamp magic, and a curse. Kudos to the author - very well done!
An interesting story about how the American South's great mythological creatures the Florida Skunk Ape, came to be. The story starts out during prohibition times and is about two brothers who made moonshine in the Florida swamps, the people they deal with and with whom one falls in love. Narrated by one of the brothers now an old man. Living in Florida, I have heard about this creature, so this was an interesting read. The author created a good story which is sometimes hard to do in a short story.
